Where I’ve Been… the Good News & Bad News

10 / 22 / 1510 / 22 / 15

Hey friends!

I’ll be honest; I’ve been a little MIA around here the past few weeks (if you haven’t noticed!). I’ll share with you exactly what has happened;

LIFE.

Life has gotten SO busy lately, and this post is all about the why. While there is definitely lots of good news, I also have some bad news to share, too. They always seem to go hand in hand, right?

I’ll start with the good news. I know, usually people start with the bad news and end with the good, but all the good news sort of leads up to the bad news. Anyway. On with it.

clothespins

First, about two months ago I found out we are expecting our second child! Woohoo!! We knew we wanted to have another one and this was about the time we were thinking, so that worked out perfectly. I’m only 13 weeks, so it’s still too soon to know the gender, but we will definitely be finding out. I’m such a planner! My due date is May 21st. Yay spring baby!

Jade-big-sister

Little miss Jade doesn’t quite understand, but she does like to rub my (already big) belly and say, “there’s my brother or sister in there!” and then asks to see the baby. I tell her she can’t quite yet, and she gives me a perplexed look and then is on to somthing else. She’ll get it soon enough! 🙂

And, for news number 2.

Before we found out we wee expecting, David and I were throwing around the idea of selling our house and moving. The market was doing reeeeeally well, and we just thought, what the heck! We had had a “5 year plan” when we moved in our current house, and it’s been exactly 5 years. We knew we wanted to have another baby soon and wanted a little bigger of a house and yard, so we threw the idea out on the table.

for-sale-sign

Two weeks(ish) later, I found out I was pregnant. We decided selling our house right now was perfect timing, as we wanted to sell, buy, and be settled in well before the baby came. We worked our tails off getting our house in order, and finally last week it went on the market. We’ve had a few showings already and we’ve looked at some other houses, but for now it’s just a waiting game. Phew! I gotta say, getting a house ready to sell and having showings is not so fun with a toddler running around taking out the toys you’re putting away. It’s a good thing she’s so cute! 😉

That all was the “good” news and why I haven’t been posting as much lately, either.

On with the bad news.

While I absolutely love blogging and sharing all my crafts and creations with you, I’ve made the super hard decision to take a break. Moving and this pregnancy has consumed us right now, leaving virtually no time for projects, crafts, or blogging. I say break because I WILL be back. I don’t know when next year, but after our little bundle is born and we get into the routine of two kiddos, I’ll have the time (and maybe energy?!) to “get my craft on.” yeah, I just said that.

You don’t know how sad this makes me, as I’ve truly loved every bit of this past year and this journey I started. I’ve made some fabulous “bloggy” friends and have learned a ton about blogging in general. I’ve gotten to chat with and “meet” some of my amazing readers (that’s you!!). But my family comes first, and these big changes going on in our lives needs my full and undivided attention (and if you have any tips on moving with a toddler, OR how to handle two kiddos, I’m all ears!!).

So, until further notice, I’ll no longer be posting on Dwelling in Happiness. Everything will still be here exactly as it is so I can pick right back up when I’m ready. However, I do still plan on posting pictures and updates of our move and the baby on social media, so if you’re not already, you can follow me on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date, and I’ll most definitely still be pinning my favorite things on Pinterest (because let’s be honest, who can stop??). I’d still love to keep in contact and hear what’s going on in your lives while I’m away, so please don’t hesitate to shoot me an e-mail me, either!

This isn’t goodbye, my friends, but “see you later.” Like I said, I will be back; so don’t go too far! I’ll be thinking about you all!

Until then… 🙂

DIY Thanksgiving Crafts and Decor

10 / 19 / 1511 / 7 / 15

Hey friends!

While it might seem crazy, Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. In fact, it’s just over a month away! It’s never too early to start planning that fabulous Thanksgiving feast you like to put on each year. Creating your own festive decor for your tablescape or house is always a fun way to celebrate, and today I’m sharing several DIY craft ideas for you to browse!

Housewarming Logo

Thanksgiving-tablescape-full-view-leftFirst up is this beautiful handmade Thanksgiving tablescape from Little Red Brick House. I love the simplistic beauty of this table with the candles, pinecones, and white dishes and linens. And the tall branches are the perfect touch!

Thanksgiving-Art-2-6This little DIY Thanksgiving art from Polished Habitat is such a cute little craft to add to your Thanksgiving decor!

thankful-tree-dandelion-patinaI love the idea of thankful trees, and this thankful tree turkey style from Dandelion Patina is such a unique version! I love the forks to hold photos, too.

music-pumpkin1-682x1024Pumpkins are always perfect decor to add to any Thanksgiving table, but I love this sheet music pumpkin from Mabey she Made it! While it looks real from the stem, it’s actually a faux pumpkin!

DIY-Chalkboard-Menu-via-Chase-the-Star-upcycle-repurpose-chalkboardpaintA menu is a simple thing to use as decor, and this DIY chalkboard menu is adorable! Chalkboard paint is so easy to use, and you can use this again and again for different holidays.

Cricut-DIY-Thanksgiving-Turkey-Shoot-Legal-Miss-Sunshine-4-1024x768Individual place settings are a great way to personalize your table, and this turkey shoot Thanksgiving tablescape from Legal Miss Sunshine is great inspiration! I love the menu, and the turkey shoot is adorable.

blue i style - 5MinuteEdgeColoredBurlapLeavesVerticalThese colored edge burlap leaves from Blue i Style is great fall decor you can leave up even after Thanksgiving! These are super easy to make, with only burlap leaves and colored Sharpies!

I love decorating with Acorns in the fall, and these little Thanksgiving “fortune” acorns from Becoming Martha are such a clever alternative! Add a little fortune or Bible verse inside and you’ve got a great conversation piece at the dinner table while you eat your Thanksgiving feast!

Last year I made these cute little “Thankful” tin can luminaries that helped light up our entryway area. I loved that they were simple, and just about free to make! They’re great to set the mood for dinner!

Seeing all these beautiful craft and decor ideas is making me excited to start planning for Thanksgiving!

How To Create Open Kitchen Shelving

10 / 16 / 1510 / 17 / 15

Hi, friends! Today Ali from Homey Improvements is here at Dwelling in Happiness to share all about how to turn your kitchen cabinets into some fun open shelving! These tips and tricks are sure to help add a little character to your kitchen!

Filled with Dishes

Tips for Creating Open Kitchen Shelving

Whether you’re moving into a new place or you’re ready to give your well-loved kitchen a new look, open kitchen shelving is a chic, modern addition to any design plan.

It’s an easy change to make in any space with a weekend’s worth of time, especially because you can typically use your pre-existing cabinetry. It’s also a convenient choice for food storage. You can see when you’re running low on certain items, and you won’t have to dig through your pantry or cabinets to find anything. If everything’s well organized in baskets or rows, it looks great, too.

Below you’ll find all of the tools and materials you need, a step-by-step guide to follow, and my expert tips from when I made this transformation in my own kitchen.

Tools and Materials

  • Hammer in order to remove nails and screws from cabinets
  • Screwdriver or drill with various heads to remove and replace any screws
  • Sandpaper
  • Small paintbrush
  • Painter’s tape
  • Drop cloth to protect the rest of your kitchen from paint
  • Paint and/or stain for your new cabinets

How-To

  1. First, you’ll have to remove the doors of the cabinets that you want to transform into open shelving. Use your screwdriver or drill to pull out screws, remove hinges, etc.

original-cabinet
2. Once you’ve removed all of the doors, it’s time to sand your shelves so you can paint or re-paint your cabinets.

Pro tip: Do just enough to remove any paints, stains and sealants, as well as any imperfections on the wood. That way, your new coat of color will go on smoothly and evenly – no need to tire out your arms from oversanding.

3. Next, you’ll have to tape off your cabinets so you don’t get any paint on your walls, backsplash or countertops. This step might feel tedious, but it’ll save you from having to do touchups later if you do it properly.

4. Start painting! The number of coats you do will depend on how you want your cabinets to look. A shabby-chic or rustic look might only require one imperfect coat, while a sleek and modern kitchen might have you bumping it up to two.

two coats cabinet pain down

Pro tip: You don’t need to rent a paint sprayer for this part of the project. In fact, some professional painters prefer to use brushes for this type of job so they can get into every nook and cranny and cover the cabinets completely.

5. Once the paint on your shelves has dried, it’s time to embellish your cabinets so they look less like a run-of-the-mill shelf and more like a focal point for your kitchen. There are plenty of ways to do this. Some homeowners choose to make shelves pop by putting wallpaper or beadboarding on the back of the cabinet. You can also get creative and add some shelf brackets or other wooden details so that your shelves look like built-ins. Of course, you’ll have to paint these to match your new shelves, but the finished product will be worth all of your elbow grease.

Finish Wallpaper

In just one weekend, you can give your ho-hum kitchen cabinets a stylish, refreshing new look.

A huge thanks to Ali for sharing these great tips! I love how the open shelving looks in her kitchen!

Hey friends! Amanda from Dwelling in Happiness here, shedding some light on one of my fabulous Summer Spotlight co-hosts: Katie from View from the Fridge!

PicMonkey Collage

I found Katie’s blog just shortly after I had started mine. I stumbled upon her adorable easy 5 minute DIY fall wreath, and after looking around at all she has to offer, I was hooked! Katie shares some absolutely adorable and fun crafts on her blog, as well as kid’s crafts, room reveals and updates, party ideas, and even some yummy recipes. She does it all!

Katie has 3 of the absolutely cuuuuutest boys around; Owen, Charlie, and little baby Ben. Katie’s an amazing boy mom because honestly, I’d go crazy having that many boys around! She’s married to her hubby Matt, and they all currently live in a suburb of Minneapolis.

Easter-Family-2Aren’t they the cutest little family ever?! Katie is a full time stay at home momma and a blogger, but boy does she have amazing talent! If you’re wondering why her blog is named “View from the Fridge,” it’s because when she and her sister were kids, they used to love sitting on top of the fridge. So cute, and I love that her blog is uniquely named after something from childhood!

Okay, so onto Katie’s fabulous talent. Choosing just a few things to share with you was so. incredibly. hard. I don’t think there’s a craft or idea from her that I don’t like. I will say it did take me foreeeever to go through and pick my absolute fav’s though, and I hope you enjoy them, too!

Thanksgiving really is right around the corner, and I just fell in love with this darling DIY Thanksgiving Art.  I love how simple it is, and it’s such a beautiful saying! And really, you could leave this up year-round. Who says it has to be for Thanksgiving?!

e_thankful2And speaking of holidays, this gorgeous white wool wreath Katie made is an Anthropologie knock-off; and it’s my new favorite wreath!! Isn’t it perfect displayed for Christmas? Or all winter long? I will be making one this year, you can count on that!

e_anthroinspiredwreath-450x650What I also love about Katie is she knows how to sew; definitely a talent I lack! But this super cute DIY sunglass case I might actually be able to make. It’s such a cute way to store your sunglasses and keep them safe!

DIY-Sunglasses-Case-FBKatie also has a passion for using natural products in her home, which include essential oils. She has some really great posts all about how to get rid of chemicals in our homes and beauty products. One of my favorites is this homemade pedicure kit. It’s the perfect gift idea for mother’s day, birthdays, Christmas, etc. And, look how yummy this recipe looks!! Yummy might not be the right word, but it seriously sounds good enough to be a margarita flavor. 😉

DIY-Pedicure-Kit-for-Mothers-Day-Pin1Another way to get chemicals out of your home is to throw out your store-bought dryer sheets and make these Homemade Dryer Sheets from Katie instead! It’s not only easy, but I had no idea just how many chemicals were in a thin little dryer sheet. I’ve switched over to these now and they’re all I use! And with only 2 ingredients, it’s even better!

DIY-Dryer-Sheets-final-horiz-textI absolutely love this Shared Boy’s Room Makeover that Katie finished for the One Room Challenge. It’s one of my favorite room makeovers that she’s done. I just love the fun herringbone wall she painted, the bright accent colors, and the whitewashed wood floors are gorgeous. I WISH I could pull up my carpet and find hardwood like that! I’m so impressed with their use of space in this room, too, and I bet her boys just love it!

shared-boys-room-CsideKatie also has some fun craft idea for kiddos, and these little toilet paper roll baby farm animals are just TOO CUTE! What a fun craft to get the kiddos involved with, and they can make their favorite animals! My little one would totally love this, so I’m saving this idea (and some T.P rolls!) for a rainy day!

tp_animals_5Need a fun birthday party idea for a little boy? Katie’s got you covered! She threw her little guy this darling superhero birthday party, and I just love all the details! She made cute little capes out of felt, light sabers out of pool noodles, and felt masks, too! I don’t have a boy, but if I did, I’d totally be throwing a party like this.

Superhero-party-fbI’m a huge avocado fan, and this avocado potato salad sounds delicious. Such a perfect and healthy dish to have during the summer. But since I’m such a potato AND avocado fan, I’d make this year round!

Avocado-Potato-Salad-sqINSTAMy most favorite thing about Katie is that she’s real. She’s down to earth. Her Crumbs and Chaos: A Real Life Tour shows just that. She shares about what a day in the life is like at her house, with 3 kiddos and all! I can totally relate, as I feel my house looks just like that all day, too (and I only have ONE kiddo!)!

Real_Life_Tour_collage_textIf you’re loving what you’ve seen so far, you’ve got to follow Katie below on social media to keep up to date with all she creates!

Tidying up the Books: A Journey to Sparking Joy Week 4

9 / 27 / 159 / 26 / 15

Hi, friends! We are now in week 4 of this life changing #sparkingjoy decluttering series we’ve been working on lately. My bloggy friends and I have come a long way so far!

A Journey to Sparking Joy:

Anderson & Grant
Making it in the Mountains
DIY Passion
Dwelling in Happiness
Zevy Joy
Cupcakes & Crinoline
Lost in the Found
The Happy Housie

This week, we are tidying up the books.

DSC_0936Now, this week so far was the easiest. You see, when my hubby and I got married and I moved into his house, I had a TON of books. We had no place to store them, so I ended up getting rid of them all. Since, I bought Kindle, and the majority of books I read now or through that device.

I maybe have 20 books that I’ve kept and it took me 10 minutes to go through them all. Not bad, right? I don’t keep magazines either, so I had none of those to sort through, either. So really, there’s not much exciting news or pictures on my end to share this week! Instead, I’m going to share some of the tips Marie Kondo suggests in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up (and you can buy your own copy on Amazon and follow along with us if you’d like! (affiliate link)).

The very first thing Marie Kondo suggest you do is put all of your books in a pile on the floor. ALL of them. For some, that might be a ton. You may have bookshelves full of lovely books, and pulling them out would be a pain. However, just DO IT! In order to effectively purge books, you’ll need to touch every single one and see if it brings you joy.

books

If you have just way too any books to put in a pile, Marie says to sort them into 4 major categories:

General (books you read for pleasure)

Practical (references, cookbooks, etc.)

Visual (Photograph collections, etc)

Magazines

Once divided, it’ll be much easier to go through and choose which books you’d like to keep. Marie also warns, “Make sure you don’t start reading it. Reading clouds your judgement. Instead of asking yourself what you feel, you’ll start asking whether you need that book or not.” While you may be tempted to pick up and read some of these books you forgot you had, try to avoid it altogether!

I do have to admit though, there are some books I had kept because, “I might want to read them again.” However, in the last 5 years, have I? No! I forgot I had half the books I kept, and I just don’t have the time anymore to read new books let along ones I’ve already read! Marie warns against this too, and says that we very rarely reread books. If you haven’t read it in a few years, just get rid of it! She also says the same about books we’ve only read half of or haven’t read at all. If we’ve kept them to collect dust, chances are we’ll never read them. Besides, if you decide you really want to reread a book or read one you gave away, your local library will probably have a copy that you can give back and not have to store! 🙂

In the end, you’ll be left with books that you absolutely love and will be excited about having. While I’m old fashioned in that I love holding and having a book in my hands to read, I will say the ease of having a Kindle to store all my books on is incredibly handy. Or as I mentioned, the library is a great place to read new books without having to buy them!

If you’re interested in seeing how my bloggy friends did in their book decluttering this week, head over to their pages below! Be sure to stay tuned in for next week, when we sort through all the mounds of papers we all have!

Have a great week!

Hello, I’m Carrie from Kenarry: Ideas for the Home! This week I have the joy of introducing you to my friend, Courtney and her blog aptly named, Crafts By Courtney. She’s incredibly talented and super sweet. I’ve loved her work ever since I laid eyes on her Pottery Barn Inspired Watercolor Palette. I still dream of making one for our own arts/crafts room. Courtney’s specialities though are creative kids’ crafts, super fun DIY parties, gorgeous coastal decor and other clever decorating ideas like her seasonal cupcake liner wreaths. Before we jump into all her inspiring projects though, let me tell you a bit more about her!

Besides being an ultra creative blogger, Courtney is a mom to three adorable boys and a wife to Clyde, who occasionally writes for the blog too. She’s been a lifelong crafter and says some of her favorite childhood memories involve crafting with her mom and sister. She’s passing that love for crafting along to her boys:

“I think having that time with your child to sit and be creative and to explore using texture, colors and (most importantly) their imagination is a great way to bond and teach at the same time.”

Here’s Courtney with her family at an Easy DIY Kids Art Theme Party for her son’s third birthday. You’ve got to check out the entire post and see how that Watercolor Palette I’m in love with inspired the whole party!

Now let’s explore some of the ideas you’ll find on Crafts By Courtney. For starters, you’ll find some really clever kid craft ideas for holidays. With Halloween just around the corner, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out her Spooky Egg Carton Bat Decoration, Kids Spider Handprint Art, or Jack-o-Lantern Art from Apple Stamping.

And while we’re talking about Halloween, she has so many beautiful home decor ideas for fall. I mentioned earlier how she uses cupcake liners to make seasonal wreaths. Don’t you just love this cupcake liner wreath she made for Halloween?

What I really love though are the Mod Podge Fall Coastal Theme Pumpkins she created. They’re such a unique twist on fall decor! She used a similar technique to make Coastal Mod Podge Christmas ornaments too.

If you like those pumpkins as much as I do though, you REALLY need to go through Courtney entire fall home tour. She has so many incredible ideas to bring this same look throughout your entire home for fall.

I could go on and on about all her fabulous idea for other holidays and seasons, but I want to make sure I share some of other her gorgeous home decor ideas. Courtney’s decorating style is beachy, nautical and fun. I think it would feel like you’re on a vacation every day if my home was decorated like hers. Here are some of my favorites:

DIY Watercolor Bathroom Art

9 / 22 / 159 / 22 / 15

Hello, hello! It has been several weeks now that my guest bathroom makeover is complete, and I still love just walking by, peaking in, and reveling in the glory of a much. prettier. bathroom.

Main-photo

When I sought out to update the bathroom months ago, I knew I wanted some unique art. I  decided to have my daughter help too, since it’s also partly her bathroom, too. I took out the watercolors, put them in front of her, and let her go to town. I love the way this DIY watercolor bathroom art turned out, and so does she!

I’m sharing the tutorial over at Juggling Act Mama today, so hope on over HERE to read all about it (and to see some adorable pictures of my little miss!). 😉

Have a great rest of the week!

Verse of the Day

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
