halloween books 4These DIY Halloween Books from Katie at Little House of Four are amazing!! So creative, and so incredible simple. Those make the best projects, in my opinion! The paper she had was the perfect neutral and spooky touch to her decor. They look so great under her pallet pumpkins, too! Great job, Katie!

Last-Minute Costume: Flo From Progressive

10 / 24 / 146 / 12 / 15

A great last-minute costume idea: dress like Flo from Progressive! So easy, and I share all the printouts needed!Hello, friends! I am SO happy it’s the weekend. It’s been so busy around here, trying to get Jade’s 1st birthday party planned and making decorations. So much to do still! Do you have any fun weekend plans?

(*SO sorry in advance for the terrible pictures, these were taken a few years ago and obviously before I knew I’d be sharing them on a blog!*)

A few years ago, David and I were invited to our friend’s Halloween party, and had to dress up. Neither of us like dressing up, but David really doesn’t like dressing up. I couldn’t decide what I wanted to be. Finally, after weeks of searching (yes, weeks), and only a couple days weeks before Halloween I decided on being Flo from Progressive. Not only was it an easy costume, but it was SO cute! We had to run to the store before going to the party, and the checker literally thought I was the real Flo. Obviously she was blind, but still, the costume was THAT good! It’s the perfect last minute costume because you only need a few things.

A great last-minute costume idea: dress like Flo from Progressive! So easy, and I share all the printouts needed! Here are some things you’ll need:

  • A long white/canvas apron
  • Iron-on transfer paper for the logo
  • Round plastic button
  • Old square pin
  • Blue ribbon (or blue headband)
  • Printouts from Progressive HERE

I got all my items above from Michael’s. Did you know that you can buy discounted gift cards to Michael’s or anywhere from a company called Raise? Basically, you’re saving money!! You can even sell your unwanted and unused gift cards for cash. So, you can purchase all the items needed for the Flo costume on a discounted gift card. Sweet! Click here to see a few gift cards that you can buy, use, and save money with right now!

A great last-minute costume idea: dress like Flo from Progressive! So easy, and I share all the printouts needed! To look just like Flo, you first need to print out a few things from the progressive website using the link above. On the page, you have the option of just buying the costume, but as a self-proclaimed DIYer, I just couldn’t do it. Scroll to the bottom and print off the button and name tag on cardstock (you can also print off the auto box, although I didn’t use it for my costume). For the Progressive logo, you’ll want to print that off on the iron-on transfer paper.

Once the logo is printed, cut it to fit on the top of the apron. Follow the directions on the pack of transfer, but basically you just iron it on.

A great last-minute costume idea: dress like Flo from Progressive! So easy, and I share all the printouts needed!

Cut down the button print-out to fit in the round plastic button. I used these ones from Michael’s:

michaels

For the pin, I cut down the name to fit on one of David’s work pins, but you can use any pin. You can just tape the name on if you plan on using it again!

If you have a navy blue headband, that works perfect. I just used some blue ribbon I had and tied it underneath my hair. I flipped my hair out on the bottoms and teased it a bit at the crown to give it the “perky” Flo hair. I drew my eyeliner on thick to look like “cat eyes,” and wore bright red lipstick. For more “Flo” makeup and hair help and tips, click here to watch a Youtube tutorial!

For clothing, you need a white polo shirt and white pants. Flo also wears blue Chuck Taylor All Stars, but I had none of that. So, gray shoes it was. All in all, I’d say it turned out quite well, and was a total hit at the party!

Do you have your Halloween costume already? What are you going to dress up as this year?

Have a GREAT weekend!!

$1 Ghost Tassel Garland

10 / 22 / 1410 / 21 / 14

SONY DSCHi! I know Halloween is only 10ish days away, but I have a super cute and easy little garland that will be just perfect to add to your Halloween decor! If you saw my 24 Spooktacular Halloween Mantels and Vignettes post, then you know that I don’t really decorate much for Halloween. We aren’t huge celebrators, though we will hand out candy and probably take Jade trick-or-treating when she’s older. That being said, I did create this cute little tassel garland so we’d have something kind of “spooky” outside our door so kiddos would actually want to come trick-or-treating to our house. And, it only cost me $1 to make! Holla!

I’ve seen a lot of tassel garlands on Pinterest, and they’re all made with tissue paper. I wanted my garland to be hanging outside, and I knew if it rained on Halloween (which it has a little the last few years!), then the tissue paper would fall apart. So, I thought I’d use a plastic Dollar Store tablecloth! This thing can get dumped in a bucket of water and it’d still come out looking just dandy.

To make this garland, you’ll need:

  • 1 white plastic tablecloth
  • Glue gun + glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Black Sharpie
  • Twine or yarn

I had everything else already, so this was incredibly easy to make.

1-6 collage1. Start with your tablecloth fresh out of the plastic. unfold your tablecloth ONE time, NOT all of the way. It will still be folded up, so they’ll be more layers in each section.

2. Cut up the crease of the fold for each section.

3. Cut through both ends of your tablecloth section, so the tassels will be free hanging, not connected.

4. Cut strips up one side, only about 1/3 of the way up. They don’t have to be perfect!

5. Flip your section and do the same on the other side, only cutting 1/3 of the way up.

6. Start rolling, with the “tassels” at either end.

7-12 collage7. Once all rolled up, hold the middle and shake so the tassels will hang more free and not be stuck to each other.

8. Twist just the middle section, and then overlap and add some hot glue to hold.

9. Cut a small strip of extra tablecloth and start wrapping around the top to make the “head”

10. Glue in the back, and glue down any excess tablecloth on top to make it more round.

11. Use a Sharpie and draw a “ghost” face

12. Repeat directions 1-11 to make as many ghosts as you wish! Put a line of hot glue on the back of the “head” and glue on some twine or yarn to make the ghosts look like they are free flying. Hang outside where your Halloween guests can enjoy!

SONY DSC I hung ours over the window so the kiddos will see it as they walk up the stairs to our porch. Hmm, they almost need some kind of light behind each one to make them stand out! Christmas lights, perhaps? 🙂

SONY DSCI’m so loving how easy this was, and how cute it is!! And the price tag is truly my favorite part. AND, because it’s plastic, it will easily hold up for many Halloweens!

SONY DSCI hope you all have a FAB rest of the week, friends!

How do you decorate for Halloween? Do you go all out or just add a few little decorations? I’d love to know!

I link up at these fun parties!

10 Essentials to the Perfect Man Cave

10 / 20 / 1410 / 20 / 14

*This post contains affiliate links. To read my full disclosure policy, CLICK HERE*
Main pictureHappy Monday! Today’s post is a little different, but equally as fun! I was contacted by a company called Man Crates, who make these amazing man gifts that not only come in a crate you have to pry open, but come complete with a mini crowbar to help! They asked me to be a part of their “Man Cave Campaign,” where we find amazingly cool gifts that would be perfect for a “new and improved” man cave, rather than the typical boring neon-beer-sign-dirty-old-couch-dart-board cave.

These Man Crates are SUCH a better alternative to finding a few random gifts on your own and wrapping them in wrapping paper. That doesn’t exactly scream manly, even if the paper is covered in beer glasses or classic cars. Man Crates has a crate for any man in your life, whether it’s your hubby, boyfriend, brother, father, friend, etc! If he is a beer, snack, poker, game, or zombie lover, they have a crate especially for him!

clean_shave_comp_s__74269.1412699898.1280.1280This is The Clean Shave Crate, and it comes with everything a man needs to get a nice close shave with first class items! Such a perfect Christmas or birthday gift. Christmas IS only 2 months away, you know. 🙂

So, today I bring you 10 essential items (and gift ideas!!) your man would need to take his man cave from boring and probably a little gross, to amaaaaazing, modern, and rustic!

1. New Leather Sofa

prod80224_av2Every man cave needs a comfy place to seat all the guy friends that come over. How beautiful is this Maxwell Leather Sofa?! The brown worn leather screams rustic and manly, and it would just totally make such a statement in his man cave. Leather is easy to clean up when they’re spilling beer and whiskey and eating messy nachos while watching the game, too.

2. Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table

il_570xN.457763687_8jifMost men probably don’t want a pretty chalk painted coffee table that they’ll always HAVE to use a coaster on. They need something sturdy, manly, and made out of wood. This handmade Reclaimed Wood Industrial Table with Distressed Pipe Legs is JUST the perfect table to have in front of that nice leather couch. It doesn’t look new, perfect, and pretty; it’s rustic and distressed, which is definitely an essential in a man cave (especially when they’ll probably end up further distressing it themselves, anyway)!

3. Simple Bar Cart

201101213540bar cart no.1_1cWe know that if there are several men in a room together watching the game or playing a game themselves, beer or some other spirited beverage is probably also happening. To accommodate, a simple wooden Bar Cart is just the ticket to store all those whiskey and tequila bottles, without having them stored all throughout the room or thrown into a cabinet. Hopefully, it’ll even help organize the man cave a little so YOU don’t have to be cleaning it up later!

4. Modern Barware Set

Modern Barware by Williamstown Furniture & Accessories f.in.d.s., furnishings.interiors.design.style. llc

To go with his new wooden bar cart, he’s also going to need a stylish Black Patent Leather Barware Set so he can impress all of his friends! If they’re feeling like a little something other than beer, they can pretend they’re high rollers and be sipping a nice bourbon or whiskey on the rocks from these silver banded glasses.

5. Statement Light

il_570xN.469129355_yn5eBecause men usually decorate their own man caves, we know they probably just grab a plain ‘ol boring lamp from the store and plop it on a side table. Or, maybe they just rely on neon signs for light. No, thank you! He needs a statement piece like this handmade Jim Beam Industrial Style Bottle Chandelier. How ideal would this look hanging over his new reclaimed wood coffee table? Ah, I’m kind of wishing this man cave was also mine!

6. Manly Clock

28676401_014_bYou know they’re not going to want to miss the big game (or your anniversary dinner!), so a clock in the man cave is a must. But, not just any old clock. This Reclaimed Wood-Wheel Clock is just the perfect addition to his wall, and will help him be on time to dinner! I love the simplicity of the wood; such a manly piece!

7. {Non-Lame} Wall Art

il_570xN.388876535_q7ycLet’s face it; most men just don’t know how to decorate. Hence, their man caves are usually less than desirable to look at (why do you think they’re usually in the garage or basement!). He’s going to need some simple wall art that isn’t going to cheapen or ruin the feel of this rustic manly retreat. This “Life is too Short to Drink Cheap Whiskey” Print is a great addition to the wall above his bar cart, which will showcase all his expensive Whiskeys they’ll drink in his new silver lined barware!

8. Kegerator

31M0dmsg0oLCome on, you know your man will be floored when you buy him this Freestanding Kegerator Beer Fridge Dispenser from Amazon! Not only is it a keg that he can share his favorite beer with his buddies, but it’s also a fridge for those times he decides to class it up and drink wine! I like this better than just a boring mini fridge that is going to just store bottles of beer anyway. I’d assume most men would prefer a freshly poured beer in a glass!

9. Coasters (that may or may not get used…)

il_570xN.357499546_c116Okay, so coasters really aren’t a necessity for guys (even if you think they are), but these Beer Slate Coasters are just too cool NOT to give your man for his man cave! I love the raw stone; maybe they’ll pretend their just throwing a rock on the table to put their beer on. That’s much manlier, right? The beer-type labels totally complete this set.

10. Huge Flat Screen TV – Obviously!

817LTC-X80L._SL1500_Aaaaaand of course, the best for last: A huge LG 55-inch Smart Tv from Amazon! Every man cave NEEDS a big screen for the big games! And, a new Smart Tv is a “smart” choice! They can access movies, and browse the web. His man friends will totally be impressed; and along with the other 9 essential items in his man cave, he’ll be the talk of the town.

It was so fun “shopping” for all these neat items. I think David might have even drooled over a few. He’s probably going to want a man cave now, too! He may just be getting a Man Crate for Christmas. 🙂

If you had your choice, what man crate would you want for yourself? I mean, let’s be honest; I may be a woman, but these are pretty ridiculously cool! I might have to pry open The Bacon Crate. Wait, no, The Snack Pack. No, the Coffee Ammo Can. Ahhh, I can’t choose!

What items would you choose for a man cave?

Whitewashed Coastal Pallet Mirror

10 / 17 / 146 / 18 / 15

Main pic

I can’t believe it’s Friday already! These weeks seem to fly by. Is the fall weather kicking in where you live yet? It sure has here! It’s been chilly, really blustery, and a little rainy earlier this week! I sure love seeing the leaves change though, it’s my favorite thing about fall. I also really love my nice flannel socks. So cozy!

Anyway, back to today’s project! I’m so excited to have finally created something using pallets. I’ve wanted to for so long, but just have never tackled it. Well, now we have! I mean, who doesn’t like free wood that’s already been distressed and weathered for you? 🙂

Our master bedroom is a coastal themed room, and I painted it a pretty aqua/teal color a couple years ago. I love the color, but have been trying to update the decor a little.

SONY DSCWe’ve had this sailboat picture up for a few years now, and David’s had it for even longer before I came along. We like the picture, but wanted a different look for that wall. I already had a free-standing smaller mirror in the closet that needed something special. So, we found some pallets, and got to work on our coastal pallet mirror!

SONY DSCLike I said, I’ve never done a pallet project before, therefore we had no clue how to take them apart. Pinterest to the rescue! We found that the easiest way to disassemble them was to use a sawzall saw and cut right through the nails. Let me just say, for being someone who calls herself a DIYer, I (we, actually) have ZERO tools. Like, we own a couple of screwdrivers and a hand saw, and that’s about it. I really want to change that, but for now, it’s a reality. SO that makes some projects a tad difficult. Enter: our amazing neighbors. Seriously friends, good neighbors are hard to come by these days, but we have the best! They have a garage full of amazing tools. While David and I were contemplating how the heck to take the pallet apart with basically nothing, our neighbor came out and offered his sawzall. A. MAZ. ING. Cut up those pallets completely in 60 seconds. We give a huge thanks to our sweet and helpful neighbors!

With the pallets apart, we cut the wood planks in half because they were quite large (again, thank you neighbor for letting us use your skil saw, too!).

SONY DSCWe laid them side by side, and used two larger pieces of wood to attach on the back using some really good wood glue. David also nailed in some nails to give it some extra support since it was so heavy.

SONY DSCEvery DIYer needs a good little helper, and here was ours, happily bouncing away!

SONY DSCWe left the glue to dry overnight. I then took my standing mirror, sanded it down just a touch so the paint would stick, and brushed on a navy blue acrylic paint. Navy is our accent color in the master bedroom.

When the wood glue dried, I whitewashed the wood to make it look more distressed and weathered. Kristi from Making it in the Mountains had just whitewashed her Pottery Barn Inspired table (You can check it out here), and I LOVED how it turned out. I knew I wanted to whitewash something, and this was the perfect project to do it on! I had some leftover white chalk paint, and I mixed it with water. I used about 3 parts water, 1 part paint for my wood. I just painted it on and kept painting until I got it the way I wanted it to look! It’s the perfect weathered look for a coastal bedroom. After it dried, we used some Gorilla glue to glue on the mirror. We put some heavy boxes on top and let it dry for a few days.

SONY DSC

To hang this heavy beast, we found OOK Hangman brand French cleat, and it is AMAZING. It holds up to 100lbs. Guys, this thing ain’t going nowhere. I just want to shout out a special thanks to my super patient hubby who had to hang this huge thing twice because his wife is slightly a Type A perfectionist and can’t sleep until it’s all just right. Thanks, honey!

After we got it up on the wall and were looking at it for a bit, we decided it needed a little something. So, I grabbed some sisal rope and got to gluing it around the edge of the mirror. It was the perfect thing to add more of a beachy touch to it!

Aaaaand, this is how it came out! We are SO in love with it! It’s the perfect addition to our long wall above my dresser.

SONY DSCThe color of the whitewashed wood just couldn’t be any more amazing. And I LOVE how the pallet wood is already weathered in some spots and splitting.

SONY DSC

SONY DSCMirrors are also such a great decor piece to add to a smaller room, as they really make the room look a little bigger. And, Jade just loves looking at herself, so it’s just one more mirror to add to her “collection”!

SONY DSC
Have you made anything with pallets recently?

I  hope you all have a wonderful weekend filled with all fall things! 🙂

DIY Mousepad Redo

10 / 15 / 146 / 18 / 15

SONY DSCHello!! I  hope you all are having a great week so far! I have a super easy redo project for you today. My mousepad has been looking quite sad, and to be honest, it has for a loooong time now. It’s not even mine, it was David’s and he gave it to me to use a few years ago. So obviously, it’s not girly or pretty. I’m tired of looking at it, it’s getting dingy and gross, and I thought it was time to change it up. I didn’t want to buy a new one, so I just redid mine! I’ve seen tutorials using fabric to redo a mousepad, but I didn’t have any pretty fabric I liked. I could have just used already patterned scrapbook paper (which is definitely an even easier alternative!), but I didn’t like anything I had. I wanted to create my own geometrical pattern, and I had a ton of cardstock, so I used that instead! And, Sharpies are great for creating fun things because they have a ton of pretty colors!

How about a nice “before and after” of this DIY mousepad redo before we get started. This is my favorite part! 🙂

Before after collage

SO much better! Here’s what you need to give your mouse pad a nice little update:

  • Old mouse pad
  • 1 sheet white cardstock
  • Sharpies (I used gold and teal)
  • Washi tape
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge

SONY DSCNow, I wanted to girl-ify my mousepad, therefore using gold was a must. I started out by tracing my mousepad onto white cardstock. Then, I cut it out and used washi tape to make a pattern. The washi tape came off pretty easily from the paper later on, which is why I used it. You’re probably thinking, “uh, you already have sparkly gold washi tape, why didn’t you just use that?” Great question! I didn’t have plain washi tape and didn’t want to run to the craft store just for tape (because you and I both know I wouldn’t JUST bring home washi tape…). So, yes, I sacrificed my pretty gold tape.

SONY DSCI just laid strips down diagonally and eye-balled how much space was in between each row. After my taping was done, I used my handy Sharpies and colored in the diamond shapes, alternating rows. (Sorry for the poor pictures, I was coloring these in at night while we watched a movie!)

SONY DSCI removed the washi tape once all the diamonds were colored in. I peeled the tape off slowly. It did take off one little section of my paper, but that’s all. Then, I used Mod Podge (I found these little bottles at Dollar Tree! I don’t know why I only bought 2!!) and slathered it on both the mousepad, and the bottom of the cardstock. I put a heavy book on top to help it stay together, and let it dry for a little bit. Once it was fairly dry, I used more Mod Podge and painted it on all over the top of the cardstock so it dried clear and sealed the paper.

3 steps collageOnce it dried completely, I had myself a nice, pretty, girly mousepad!

SONY DSCI love the pretty design, and the colors. AND I love that it’s custom! Such an easy update to help your desk seem just a little brighter.

I hope the rest of your week is lovely!!

Do you like to give your old items new life? What have you “updated” lately?

Easy Rustic Arrow String Art

10 / 10 / 146 / 12 / 15

This rustic arrow string art is easy to make, and looks super cute hanging in a gallery wall!

SONY DSC

Haaaaappy Friday, friends! I’ve seen string art for awhile now all over Pinterest, and I’ve been loving it all. I thought about doing a state one for our gallery wall, but decided to do something a little different. Arrows seem to be all the rage lately, so I took a whack (Ha! Get it?!) at some arrow string art of my own! It’s really so easy, just a little time consuming. I was able to hammer (Come on, I’m on a roll!) this project out in a few hours, over a span of 2 of my daughter’s naps!

I started with a simple plain piece of wood I got for FREE at Home Depot. PS, did you guys know they have a 70% off wood section there?! I didn’t until now, and it’s AMAZING. So, like I said, I got this piece for free. I actually got it a few months back while in Home Depot. Jade was hysterically crying because she was tired of being in her carseat, so when I asked the guy if he could cut me a little piece of wood, he said, “here, you can just have it.” It might have been his way of either saying, “lady, get your screaming baby out of here,” or, “wow lady, you look like you really need some help right now, so you can just HAVE the wood.” Either way, I’ll take free. 🙂

wood collageAnyway, I sanded it down a little on the edges so they were smooth, and put a few coats on of some homemade wood stain I had leftover from another project (I made it by  just soaking steel wool in vinegar for a few days). If you’re going for a specific color, I’d buy some stain. For this project, I thought it’d be fun to just play around and see how the color came out. I gave it two or 3 stain coats, then painted on a clear polyurethane sealer. I was super pleased with how the color came out!

SONY DSCWhile the clear sealer dried, I made and printed out some arrow shapes. Because my piece of wood was a random size, I had to print out 3 individual arrows and piece them together. I also wanted them to be big, and I couldn’t fit 3 large arrows on one 8.5×11 piece of paper. If you want to try making this arrow string art for yourself, I’ve provided the free arrow printout for you below. I’ve included both a 3 arrow pdf in case your wood is smaller, and also a large single arrow pdf if your wood is bigger like mine, in which case you’d print out 3 and piece them together. Click below to print!

3 Smaller Arrows

1 Large Arrow

I printed out my arrows, cut, and taped them down according to how I’d like them (My printer was out of black ink, so mine printed out pink!). Then, I just started hammering away! I used wire nails #16 x 1 1/2in. I nailed them about half in inch together, maybe a little less.

Finished collageIt took me a little over an  hour to get all the nails in, AND, I didn’t even hit my thumb once! A win for me! After all the nails were in, I just ripped off the paper. That was a little hard, and unfortunately a few little pieces of paper got stuck under the nails. But, you can’t see them once the string is wrapped around the nails.

For the string, I knew I wanted an ombre effect. So, I found three bunches of thin crochet string in coordinating colors. Joann’s made it easy, as the three colors were in consecutive order, so I didn’t have to go fishing for three similar colors to make the ombre work. Yay! I chose to do grays and keep it neutral. I started with a corner nail, and tied the string around it a couple times so it was secure. Then, I just sort of randomly weaved the string back and forth around the nails, making sure every nail had string around it at least once. Then I went around the perimeter of each arrow with the string, going around each nail. I tied it off at the same nail I started with and trimmed the string. This took another hour to finish all the stringing.

Process collageTo finish my arrow art off, I sanded around the edges of the wood to make it look more worn and rustic. I am in LOVE with how it all came together!!

SONY DSCOnce I actually finish up my gallery wall, this will adorn it with some other family pictures. I’m still working on repainting that wall, and getting some different furniture. That will be for future posts. 🙂

SONY DSCI really like the ombre effect as well, it gives it some more “character.”

SONY DSCThis string art thing is kind of addicting, and now I want to string art everything in my house. I might have to hit up Home Depot again for more wood, but this time without a screaming baby. 🙂

Have a GREAT weekend, friends!

Have you ever done string art? If so, what did you make?

I link up at these fun parties!
